Liturgical notes

Now the centre and high point of the entire celebration begins, namely, the Eucharistic Prayer itself, that is, the prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification … Furthermore, the meaning of this Prayer is that the whole congregation of the faithful joins with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal, §78

Clearly this high point of the Mass is not a time to retreat into private, devotional prayer; rather it is a time when we are called to exercise our baptismal priesthood by giving thanks and offering sacrifice. The ordained presider leads us in this time of active, conscious participation by his proclamation of the eucharistic prayer. Our role is not a passive one during this prayer, but we must give content to the words being proclaimed as we name in our heart our thanks and offer our sacrifice from the week that has passed.

Liturgical notes

By the nature of the ministerial priesthood, something else is put in its proper light, something certainly to be held in great esteem, namely, the royal priesthood of the faithful, whose spiritual sacrifice is brought to completion through the ministry of the Bishop and the Priests, in union with the Sacrifice of Christ, the sole Mediator.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal, §5

The call to ministerial priesthood in the church is only possible if the person has already shared in the baptismal priesthood through baptism and confirmation. In this way, those who are called to minister to the priestly people of God are not separated from the people of God but are appointed to serve them. They ensure that ‘my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father,’ that our sacrifices may find completion in Christ. Through the ministry of the priest, the celebrating assembly unite in offering the sacrifice ‘for our good and the good of all his holy Church’.

‘O people of Sion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart’

Liturgical notes

At the Last Supper, Our Saviour instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood, by which the Sacrifice of his Cross is perpetuated until he comes again; and till then he entrusts the memorial of his Death and Resurrection to his beloved spouse, the Church.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal, §2

In the great uncertainties of our times, we can always return to the enduring presence of our Saviour, whose enduring sacrifice provides sustenance for our living. We gather Sunday after Sunday to bring the humble gifts of our living the Christian life in service, forgiveness and charity to be placed upon the altar of our community, so that they may be taken up into the consecration of the Mass and our humble offering may become ‘One Body, One Spirit in Christ’. Then we are sent forth to continue to bring that consecration of our world to life in our daily living.

‘To you, I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in you be put to shame’
